OPERATION FOOD SECURE

The Operation Food Secure program ran from May 2020 - August 2021. During this time, OFS served:

45,980 Children

46,628 Adults

17,521 Seniors

Serving the equivalent of 3.42 MILLION MEALS to 110,129 people!

Recognizing that we can go farther together, TRM's Operation Food Secure (OFS) program leveraged a powerful network of churches, tribes, neighborhood associations, nonprofits, and other civic groups to distribute boxes of fresh, healthy food to those in need in our community.

OFS began with the USDA’s Farmers to Families Food Box Program, a COVID-19 relief effort that purchased surplus food products from farmers and redistributed it to nonprofits like TRM. TRM then organized a network of staff and volunteers to distribute the food to people in need in the Topeka and NE Kansas community.

The OFS team came to find this effort was about much more than just a food box. By training our volunteers to develop a trust-based relationship with those they served, the food boxes became a catalyst to strengthen communities, build new relationships, and sow seeds of hope.

REFLECTIONS FROM A TRM INTERN

We were honored to host Emily Irsik on the Operation Food Secure team as our summer intern. Emily was placed with OFS through the Congressional Hunger Center’s Zero Hunger Internship Program. A Nutrition and Health Major at Kansas State University, Emily developed an educational pamphlet for food box recipients to use as they prepared the ingredients in their food boxes.

Emily said, “I have been amazed to meet individuals who have shared their stories and struggles with things like drug use, domestic abuse, and homelessness. There was one individual who completely changed my perspective on homelessness.”
