From our Family to Yours

Each year, hundreds of individuals call the Topeka Rescue Mission “home” during the Christmas season. As a staff, we do everything we can to try and make the season special. While we cannot solve everyone’s problems, we hope to always give each one the gift of love, joy, peace, and the recognition of the reason why Christmas exists in the first place- our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. As we spend Christmas day with our Mission family, God helps to really put some things into perspective in our own lives. What is really important during this time of year?

There are millions of people dying in this world today. They are not just dying of hunger or starvation in foreign countries, but they are dying across the world from the lack of love and the lack of family. There are many even in Topeka, Kansas who don’t know what it means to have a family that loves them. Millions who would give anything just to spend one day living the life we can so easily take for granted at times. How very blessed we are. The Topeka Rescue Mission is not just a shelter. It is a home and it is a family.

There was one man and one man alone who achieved the definition of perfection and His name is Jesus Christ. The rest of us have our flaws, we make mistakes, and unfortunately at times, we hurt one another. But that’s not what life is about and that’s not what Christmas is about. God sent His Son to save our lives and forgive our sins so that we would have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). And His Word says, “ Freely you have received, freely give.”  (Matthew 10:8)

There are going to be many things that we will receive this Christmas. Some deserved and some undeserved.   None of us did anything to deserve the everlasting love of God. None of us did anything to deserve the gift of Jesus Christ. But God saw fit to bless us with these eternal gifts anyway.  May we embrace these gifts He has given us and may we each search our hearts this Christmas and ask the Lord what it is that we are to give. Maybe we need to give some things to God that we have been holding on to-fear, worry, anxiety, or regret. Maybe we need to give Him our lives completely. Maybe we need to give someone the gift of forgiveness. Maybe we need to give someone the gift of love. Whatever it is that God lays on your heart to give this year, I pray you find the strength and courage to give it. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13).

At the Topeka Rescue Mission, we are grateful for you. We are grateful that you are in our lives and that, through your support, we are able to continually give the gifts of life and peace to those who come through our doors.

May you find joy and peace in the many gifts God has blessed you with this year. May you receive His presents and Presence in your life. He freely gives them to you because His love for you is so great. We pray God’s blessing upon you for a truly merry Christmas and amazing new year.

In Christ,

The Topeka Rescue Mission Family
